Hong Kong 2013

In June 2013, I was chosen to travel to Hong Kong and be a part of the 2nd annual World Design Summer Camp along with 4 of my classmates. As the only university from the United States that was invited, we were incredibly honored to have been given this opportunity. The camp consisted of a two-week work shop where we focused on the traditional Hong Kong culture and came up with a design solution relevant to their culture today. While traveling around the city, I gained inspiration from just about everything. These are some of my favorite images from museums, street markets, interesting signage, and the beautiful views.

All of the participants were split into two tracks; Fashion and Social innovation. I was randomly placed into the fashion track, where the final project was to create a garment influenced by the traditional Hong Kong culture. We were divided into groups of five to produce the final project in the second week. Oddly enough, it just so happened that my group was the one with barely any fashion design experience (comprised of three visual communications, one industrial, one interior space, and one first-year fashion). Along with our diverse design skills, we all spoke different languages and it was very difficult to communicate ideas. In the end, we pulled together to create an upcycled window display. We used materials from all around the city–cans, crates, bottles, bags, etc.–to create the display. it turned out that with enough sketching and prototyping, we were able to pull together a very interesting piece and learn a lot about teamwork in the process.
